Two Chilean Miners Killed at Los Reyes Mine

In the region where 33 miners were rescued in Chile last month while millions were mesmerized by the effort and positive results, the same couldn't be said Monday, as the Los Reyes copper mine collapsed, resulting in the deaths of two miners who ended up trapped underground.

Five miners were able to survive the collapsing mine, one of which had a minor injury that had to be treated.

Initial reports are the accident may have resulted from explosives, although that's a preliminary conclusion at this point in the investigative process.

The San Jose mine, where the 33 miners were rescued, is about 45 kilometers north of Copiapo, while the Los Reyes mine is 65 kilometers (40 miles) northeast of Copiapo.

Officials remain at the scene of the accident to investigate its cause.
