Motorola (NYSE:MOT), RIM (Nasdaq:RIMM), Nokia (NYSE:NOK) Apple (Nasdaq:AAPL), Google (Nasdaq:GOOG), Microsoft (Nasdaq:MSFT) All Growing Mobile Share

Even though there has been some jockeying for position with mobile and smartphone providers, the broader market has all of them enjoying growth as it continues to expand at a torrid pace, with Motorola (NYSE:MOT), RIM (Nasdaq:RIMM), Nokia (NYSE:NOK) Apple (Nasdaq:AAPL), Google (Nasdaq:GOOG), Microsoft (Nasdaq:MSFT) continuing to perform solidly in the sector.

Canaccord said, "Market researcher comScore (Nasdaq:SCOR) published a tally of trends in the U.S. mobile phone space for the three-month period ending in October. The report ranked both the leading mobile original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), and the leading smartphone operating system (OS) platforms in the U.S. according to their share of mobile subscribers ages 13 and older. It also reviewed the most popular activities and content accessed via the subscriber’s primary mobile phone. The October report found Samsung to be the top handset manufacturer with 24.2% market share, while LG ranked second with 21.0% share, followed by Motorola (17.7% share), RIM (9.3% share) and Nokia (7.1% share). For smartphone platforms, RIM led in the U.S. with 35.8% share of subscribers followed by Apple at 24.6%. Google Android saw another month of strong growth, capturing 23.5% of smartphone subscribers. Microsoft accounted for 9.7% of smartphone subscribers, while Palm rounded out the top five with 3.9%. Despite losing share to Android, most smartphone platforms continue to gain subscribers as the smartphone market overall continues to grow. While the overall market is growing, so are consumers' ambitions; mobile subscribers are increasingly exploring their phone’s capabilities. Nearly seventy-percent said they now use text messaging on their mobile device, while 36.2% using mobile Internet browsing. Subscribers who used downloaded applications comprised 33.7% of the audience, while accessing of social networking sites represented 24.2%, and games represented 23.7%."

Motorola closed Monday at $8.19, dropping $0.05, or 0.61 percent. RIM was at $63.33, up by $0.68, or 1.08 percent. Nokia ended the session at $9.93, losing $0.07, or 0.70 percent. Apple continues to soar during the Christmas season, closing at $320.15, gaining $2.71, or 0.85 percent. Google roared as well, ending at $578.36, up by $5.36, or 0.94 percent. Microsoft was at $26.84, down $0.18 or 0.67 percent. Palm, or Hewlett Packard (NYSE:HPQ), closed at $42.85, down $0.18, or 0.42 percent.
