Working on one of the major obstacles to a wider acceptance of electric cars - finding a place to charge them - Ford Ford (NYSE:F) now has developed a unit that can charge a car at home.
Mike Tinskey, manager of vehicle electrification and infrastructure for Ford, said this recently, “We view this (home charger) as a part of the vehicle.”
Manufacturing the charger on behalf of Ford is Leviton Manufacturing Co. Inc. of Melville, N.Y.
One obvious problem for the home charge is will take about 3 hours to charge the car. Unless you have several cars on hand when you need them, this is definitely a drawback.
This also keeps the feeling of an electric car being a novelty and not a serious alternative.
The home charger itself will be able to be attached to the wall of a garage, and removed if the owners sell and go to another home.
