The powerful snowstorm blanketing the northern part of the U.S. has resulted in automakers Ford Motors (NYSE:F), General Motors (NYSE:GM) and Chrysler to temporarily shutter 22 plants.
Ford spokeswoman Marcey Evans said the company closed plants in Claycomo, Missouri; Flat Rock and Dearborn, Michigan; Avon Lake, Ohio; and Chicago.
GM spokeswoman Kimberly Carpenter, said GM shut nine factories in Indiana, Michigan, Missouri, Kansas and Texas.
Chrysler shut down 10 plants in Ohio, Michigan and Ontario, but said eight of them will be reopened for the second shift. Its plant in Belvedere, Illinois will remain closed, and the Toledo, Ohio will continue to be monitored, said the automaker.
Ford added, if the ongoing storm delays shipment of parts, more factory closing could result.
Evans said, “We’re really trying to run as many as we can, but it will depend on having the people and parts to do so. Right now it looks like parts may become more of an issue than people for some facilities.”
All automakers, including Subaru and Honda (NYSE:HMC), said they're operating and making decisions on a shift-by-shift and plant-by-plant basis.
