Juniper Networks Inc. (NYSE:JNPR) is close to revealing a long-awaited networking system named QFabric today, as the company ups the anti with its competition with rival Cisco Systems (NASDAQ:CSCO).
The first component of the new system - a "node" that connects server and storage systems to a data center network—will be available to order Wednesday. The QFX3500 node costs $34,000 and "is priced competitively with our competitors' legacy products," a Juniper spokesman said.
Two additional components will be available in the third quarter of 2011, Juniper said, though it refused to reveal how much those components will cost.
Juniper said the new system, which was formerly known by the code name "Project Stratus," eliminates layers of equipment and complexity compared with networking schemes currently sold by Cisco and other vendors at this time.
Goldman Sachs Group (NYSE:GS) analyst Simona Jankowski noted Juniper's new scheme "has the potential to be very highly disruptive" and could lead to further market-share gains for Juniper, more than likely at the expense of Cisco's.
