Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) is launching a store to sell software for the Android mobile-operating system, heating up its rivalry with Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG).
According to Amazon, it'll keep 30 percent of the revenue generated from sales of applications, while developers will get the other 70 percent.
Aaron Rubenson, who oversees Amazon’s app store, said, “There is a huge volume of apps out there. The challenge that creates for the Android ecosystem is it can be hard to find the products that are relevant to you. We’ve spent years developing an e-commerce platform that helps customers find relevant products amidst a massive selection.”
Tablets or phones will be able to download the Amazon app store. Customers will also be able to shop for apps with a one-click option that links back to their Amazon account, instead of having to manually input their credit-card number for each purchase they make.
There was no specific date released for the store, but Amazon did say the store will launch first in the U.S. market.
