With the possibility of generating billions more through the wildly popular tablets, Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) is getting a version of Office together to offer on the device.
On desktop and laptop computers Microsoft generates over $10 billion in sales annually. Add to that a portion of the tablet market (even with some cannibalization) and it could be a big boost for the software giant.
To get an idea of what Office for tablets will be like, it's closer to the version offered on Windows Phone 7 than its computer predecessor.
What Microsoft has named the "Metro" interface, which allows a user to switch between functions like Mail, Calendar, and Contacts in Windows Phone 7, will be included in the tablet Office version as well.
Microsoft closed Thursday at $24.78, down $0.01, or 0.04 percent.
