Sprint (S) Rolls "Common Cents" into Virgin Mobile

Approximately a year after Sprint (NYSE:S) launched its Common Cents Mobile brand, which is a pre-pay phone service sold via Wal-Mart (NYSE:WMT) stores, it has decided to merge it with payLo by Virgin Mobile.

Sprint spokeswoman Melinda Tiemeyer said the change will be made on May 18. It will be out of Wal-Mart stores at that time.

The brand was created to attract customers which fit Wal-Mart's customer base, which prefer a mobile service without a contract, including things like texting and unlimited calling.

Sprint said the two services target the same demographic, and after the change there will be more options available to customers, citing Virgin Mobile’s Beyond Talk plans which have done very well in Wal-Mart outlets already.

Sprint closed Friday at $4.73, gaining $0.11, or 2.38 percent.
