LDK Solar (NYSE:LDK) has been getting punished lately as funding in the industry around the U.S. and the world is starting to fizzle as governments look closely at the industry and question the value of the sector as a viable energy source.
Uncertainty surrounding Italy cutting back on its financial commitment to the solar industry while deciding to focus on rooftop solar has hurt some companies in the sector and possibly could help others. But it shows the reason there is so much volatility in the industry, as it is increasingly being questioned by governments as to the viability of solar and other non-conventional energy sources being worth the cost and effort, as they are unreliable, expensive and won't help much over the long term.
Germany also announced on Friday they're probably going to revisit their commitment to the size of its feed-in-tariff, which is likely to be lowered, based on the comment itself.
Bill Gates also recently said solar and other so-called alternative energy sources have no real chance of dealing with our energy challenges, and rightly called solar and wind energy a "cute" idea but being no solution to our energy needs.
The truth is if an industry can't survive without the government, it's not a real market, but an artificial construct that needs to be abandoned as far as taxpayer subsidies and allowed to compete on its own in the marketplace. That includes all energy sectors.
LDK Solar Co., Ltd. participates in the design, development, manufacture, and marketing of photovoltaic products; and development of power plant projects.
LDK Solar (LDK) closed Friday at $9.60, dropping $0.49, or 4.86 percent.

Same as ever ....
Eat the apples that grow,
it is cheap, unless yo9u have to plant a tree ...
Solar is cheap ion the long run and with higher capacities.
Oil and nuclear energy are expensive, when you look at the real costs for humanity, when you look at our ozon layers, earth warming, follow up costs when first low level countries will get flooded.
But continue to live in the today and now .... without planing the future .... let the capitalism run its curse and destroy, what is left.
You just have to look at big cieties and cultures who plan their future and compare them with thowse who let them run....
You yust have to look where you have water treatment stationws and where you don't have them ....
At first, they are more expensive and you pay a lot more .... but in the long run, where you take care, you still can live ....
It is difficult to hear so many bull... about clean energy and solar and then still have Bill Gates name used and probably also completely out of context ....
Jmho
Thanks all the people who have a vision beyond just money and thanks for all the people who still believe that this earth deserves a chance.
