Among the top five performing ETFs on Wednesday, all of them were those that short specific sectors or segments, including ProShares UltraShort Silver (NYSE:ZSL), iPath Short Extended Russell 2000 TR ETN (NYSE:RTSA), iPath Short Extended Russell 1000 TR ETN (NYSE:RTSA), ProShares UltraShort MSCI Pacific ex-Jpn (NYSE:JPX) and PowerShares DB Base Metals Dble Shrt ETN (NYSE:BOM).
Although it's sure to be short-lived, ProShares UltraShort Silver (ZSL) has been soaring over the last several trading sessions as silver prices have taken a hit. It closed Wednesday at $19.45, gaining $1.94, or 11.07 percent.
iPath Short Extended Russell 2000 TR ETN (RTSA) closed the day at $27.10, jumping $2.27, or 9.14 percent.
iPath Short Extended Russell 1000 TR ETN (ROSA) closed at $27.67, rising $2.19, or 8.59 percent.
ProShares UltraShort MSCI Pacific ex-Jpn (JPX) closed the trading session at $48.36, up $3.53, or 7.87 percent.
The fund invests in derivatives that Proshare Advisors think will have similar daily return characteristics as twice (200%) the inverse of the daily return of the MSCI Pacific ex-Japan Index.
PowerShares DB Base Metals Dble Shrt ETN (BOM) closed Wednesday at $10.92, climbing $0.67, or 6.54 percent.
The fund allows investors to take a short position on the performance of the industrial metals sector.
