Can (CAT) (TXT) (UTX) (ETN) (HON) (GE) Meet Expectations?
As evidenced by the recent 6 percent plunge in share price of Alcoa (NYSE:AA), even after beating expectations, U.S. manufacturers such as General Electric Co (NYSE:GE), Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) and Textron Inc (NYSE:TXT), United Technologies Corp (NYSE:UTX), Eaton Corp (NYSE:ETN) and Honeywell International Inc (NYSE:HON) will be under pressure to perform as investors remain jittery about the economy.
Growth has been decent over the last year, but the artificial stimulation coming from quantitative easing is about to end, and questions of whether or not the companies can sustain themselves are already on the periphery of the minds of investors.
There is uncertainty about the sustainability of the so-called recovery around the world, and with so many negative catalysts creating economic pressure, it's no a surety by any means manufacturers will continue to grow at the level they recently have.
Manufacturers will also have to deal with recent success as well, which appears to be slowing in growth, which will weigh on the stocks if there aren't positive catalysts to balance off the negative.
In other words, it's going to be hard to impress shareholders going forward, and that will probably pressure many manufacturer share prices.

Eaton (NYSE:ETN) Should Beat in Fourth Quarter
Eaton Corporation (NYSE:ETN) has pretty high expectations, but UBS (NYSE:UBS) says they think they'll be able to meet them, and offer guidance above consensus.
UBS says, "ETN sold off last Thurs. (although partly recovered Fri.), we believe primarily because of disap pointing results at Parker Hannifin (NYSE:PH) (a close comp). We believe investors reacted negatively to PH earnings ($1.39 vs. cons. $1.30) because (1) beat was largely on taxes, and (2) expectations were high after solid beats in each of the last 6 quarters. While we believe expectations are fairly high for ETN (reports 4Q on 1/27), we anticipate a 4Q beat, and we expect initial ‘11 guidance above consensus.
"Given recent improvements in end market conditions, we are raising our 4Q10 EPS estimate to $1.70, from $1.64 (cons. $1.67 and guidance $1.55-$1.65) and our 2011 EPS estimate to $7.55, from $7.30. We believe the midpoint of guidance for next year is likely to be somewhere between the consensus ($7.25) and our estimate ($7.55), with room for guidance to move higher over the course of 2011."
UBS maintains a "Neutral" rating on Eaton Corporation (ETN), which closed Monday at $102.70, up $0.25, or 0.24 percent. UBS raised their price target on Eaton from $98 to $106.

BAE (LSE:BA) Asks GE (NYSE:GE), Eaton (NYSE:ETN), Warburg Pincus for Final Bids
BAE Systems Plc (LSE:BA) has requested General Electric (NYSE:GE), Eaton Corporation (NYSE:ETN) and Warburg Pincus to submit final bids for their Platform Solutions unit this week.
With three bids being offered in the latter part of December, the process has went on longer than expected, as the decision was expected to be made at that time.
Evidently BAE is pushing the three into a bidding war of a sort in hopes of extracting a better price from the winner.
Analysts have expected the platform solutions group to attract a bid from $1.6 billion to $2 billion, but sources say they all came in on the lower end of the range.
BAE reportedly wants to close a deal sometime within the next several weeks.
