JDS Uniphase (JDSU) Getting Crushed in New Quarter
JDS Uniphase (NASDAQ:JDSU) has a stellar first quarter, soaring 44 percent during that time, but that was then and this is now, and in the first day of the second quarter the share price is getting crunched after the company announced again there will be a delay in anticipated networking upgrade spending.
Shares plummeted over 8 percent on the news for most of the trading day.
Stifel Nicolaus noted, “we would see any weakness in the stock as an opportunity for long-term investors to build positions.”
That was after Stifel lowered their fully year 2011 earnings estimate on the company, while raising its full year 2012 EPS.
The company said they believe the sector will “gather momentum over the next several quarters.”
JDS was trading at $19.22, falling $1.62, or 7.77 percent, as of 1:34 PM EDT. Stifel Nicolaus reiterated its "Buy" rating on JDS.

Techs Jabil (JBL) ( AOL) (DELL) (HPQ) (JDSU) Jump on Otherwise Down Day
Shares of technology stocks Jabil (NYSE:JBL), AOL Inc. (NYSE:AOL), Dell Inc. (NASDAQ:DELL), Hewlett-Packard Co. (NYSE:HPQ) and JDS Uniphase Corp. (NASDAQ:JDSU) are all trading up today, even though the overall sector has been under pressure.
Jabil (JBL) soared over 11% after the electronics contract manufacturer gave an upbeat second-quarter report and third-quarter forecast.
AOL Inc. (AOL) climbed 3.3% after UBS (NYSE:UBS) analyst Bryan Pitz raised his rating on the stock to buy from neutral.
Other gains came from Dell Inc. (DELL), Hewlett-Packard Co. (HPQ) and JDS Uniphase Corp. (JDSU).
However, the Nasdaq Composite Index (COMP) fell 18 points to 2,665, and the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index (SOX) was also in the red.
Much of the performance was blamed on negative broad-market reaction to the rising price of oil, which reached the $105-a-barrel range, and a big decline in U.S. new-home sales in February.

Opticals (JDSU) (FNSR) (OPXT) Correction Will Continue
Finisar (NASDAQ:FNSR), JDS Uniphase (NASDAQ:JDSU) and Opnext (NASDAQ:OPXT), among other optical companies will continue to experience a correction at minimum until the end of summer, according to Stifel Nicolaus analyst Ajit Pai.
Pai said that “the inventory correction and slowdown for the optical communications industry is likely to last at least until the end of the summer.”
While the Japan disaster won't won't affect demand in the industry, it will have an effect on making the slowdown worse because of increased uncertainty in general, added Pai, citing “rising inflation in emerging markets” and “uncertainty regarding upgrade/deployment plans at developed world tier one carriers.”
Pai estimates EPS for Finisar of $1.54 in the fiscal year ending in April, down 2 cents from his prior estimate, and $1.70 for 2012, down 8 cents. His price target on the company was lowered from $39 to $34.
For JDSU’s fiscal year ending in June 2011, Pai sees the company making 95 cents a share in 2011, down from 99 cents before, and $1.20 for 2012.
He maintains a "Buy" on Finisar and JDSU,, saying the long-term these remains in place for both of them.

Finisar (FNSR), Ciena (CIEN), JDS Uniphase (JDSU), Oclaro (OCLR) Crunched Wednesday on Low Guidance
With the optical sector being extremely volatile, when one company announces something important, the rest usually will rise or fall on that news, as Ciena (NASDAQ:CIEN), JDS Uniphase (NASDAQ:JDSU) and Oclaro (NASDAQ:OCLR) did when Finisar (NASDAQ:FNSR) lowered their guidance recently.
Optical-networking companies got hit hard Wednesday, with Finisar Corp. (FNSR) leading the disaster. Finisar’s shares closed with a loss of $15.43,or 38.5%, at $24.61 in the heels of the company’s weaker-than-expected fourth-quarter forecast.

Blood in the Streets for (JDSU) (OCLR) (OPLK) (CIEN) (INFN) After Finisar (FNSR) Earnings Warning
Shares of JDS Uniphase Corporation (Nasdaq:JDSU), Oclaro, Inc. (Nasdaq:OCLR), Oplink Communications Inc. (Nasdaq:OPLK), CIENA Corp. (Nasdaq:CIEN) and Infinera Corp. (Nasdaq:INFN) are getting crushed today on the weak earnings guidance of Finisar Corp. (Nasdaq:FNSR).
While the third quarter results of Finisar were in line with expectations, its fourth quarter earnings guidance of $0.31-$0.35 was so far below analyst estimates of $0.48 a share that it spoke of probably sector problems.
Finisar said, "the Company will be impacted by the full three months of the annual price negotiations with telecom customers that typically take effect on January 1, the 10-day long shutdown at certain customers for Chinese New Year in February, the adjustment of inventory levels at some telecom customers, particularly for products which had previously been on allocation and long lead times, including WSS and ROADM line cards, and a slowdown in business in China overall."
JDS Uniphase Corporation was trading at $22.31, falling $3.07, or 12.10 percent, as of 11:48 AM EST. Oclaro was at $13.86, dropping $2.76, or 16.61 percent. Ciena (NASDAQ:CIEN) Reaches Another High Today
Now that Ciena (NASDAQ:CIEN) has reached another high today, it could be time for investors to re-access their strategy with the company, as it's been moving up fast; too fast.
On Friday the provider of equipment which helps Internet congestion relief, jumped 15 percent, and today again moved to a 52-week high, although it has pulled back some in mid-day trading.
In the last couple of months the share price has doubled, also making it better to tighten things up as the stock could be ready for a healthy correction.
The recent surge in share price for Ciena came in response to JDS Uniphase Corporation (Nasdaq:JDSU) big quarter. That's important because JDSU provides companies like Ciena the components used to battle Web congestion. If they're seeing strong growth in demand, the assumption is that's because companies like Ciena are also seeing strong growth in demand.
With growing pressure on the Internet, Ciena should be a good long-term play, but with its recent run-up in share price, it may be time to take a breather and wait for dips.
Ciena was trading at $26.92, up $0.02, or 0.07 percent, as of 1:05 PM EST.

JDSU (NASDAQ:JDSU) Shares Explode As They Blast Past Earnings Expectations
JDS Uniphase (NASDAQ:JDSU) turned things around in their latest quarter, surging to a profit after a big loss in the same quarter last year, as they handily beat analysts' expectations.
Investors rewarded the company, pushing up the share price by over 22 percent in mid-day trading, at point reaching over 24 percent.
Part of the big turnaround is the huge success of Microsoft's (NASDAQ:MSFT) Kinect device, which exploded in sales for the software giant, and of which JDSU supplies two of the components for.
With Microsoft sure to enhance and expand Kinect, JDSU is positioned to ride the Kinect success going forward.
Also of note was the demand for JDSU testing products in relationship to the burgeoning traffic on the Internet, as telecommunications companies grow their networks.
Net income for the second fiscal quarter reached $23.6 million, or 10 cents a share, up from the loss of $19.5 million, or 9 cents a share, in the same quarter last year. Revenue came in at $473.5 million, a big gain over the $342.9 million in revenue generated last year.
After adjustments, income was 29 cents a share, far above the 19 cents a share analysts had estimated. Analysts were looking for revenue to reach $438.4 million for the quarter.
Guidance for the current quarter from JDSU was for revenue to come in at a range of $400 million to $460 million.
JDS Uniphase was trading at $22.00, gaining $4.07, or 22.70 percent, as of 12:23 PM EST.

As far as some of the substance, one of those creating a lot of buzz was the announcement that Nvidia Corp. would be partnering with ARM Holdings to develop central processors for PCs, a direct challenge to Intel Corp. (Nasdaq:INTC). While it's not a short-term play, it did generate a lot of talk.
One of the huge products of the Christmas season was Microsoft's Kinect, which CEO Steve Ballmer said in a keynote address that the company had sold about 8 million units since November. Ballmer also revealed plans to expand Windows operating system platform reach.
