Goldman's (GS) Blankfein Gets Huge Pay Package Boost

Goldman Sachs (NYSE:GS) CEO Lloyd Blankfein received a big boost in his compensation package from 2009 to 2010, with the total rising from under $1 million in 2009 to over $14 million in 2010, according to a regulatory filing on Friday.

In January Goldman announced the board of directors of the company boosted his salary even more, increasing it to $2 billion for 2011. That doesn't include other compensation. They also raised the salary of other key executives to $1.85 million a year for 2011.

Concerning Blankfein and 2010, his base salary was $600,000. He also received a cash bonus of $5.4 million and stock awards of $7.65 million for the year.

He was also awarded restricted stock worth $12.6 million, a big increase from the $9 million awarded in 2009. That's not counted in the overall annual compensation package because it's paid over a period of 3 years.

Other compensation came to a little over $464,000, which included perks like car use, medical and dental coverage, among other things.

Goldman's (GS) Blankfein Called to Testify at Rajaratnam Trial

Goldman Sachs Group (NYSE:GS) Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Lloyd Blankfein will be called by U.S. prosecutors to testify as a government witness at the insider-trading trial of Galleon Group LLC co-founder Raj Rajaratnam, according to Bloomberg.

In a letter sent yesterday to U.S. District Judge Richard Holwell, who is presiding over Rajaratnam’s trial in Manhattan, prosecutors sought to limit Blankfein’s cross-examination by defense lawyers, including “whether Goldman Sachs is presently the subject of any pending investigations by either the Department of Justice or the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission” and whether Goldman Sachs bears any responsibility for the 2008 financial crisis.

After testimony concluded today, Holwell said that he will hear oral arguments regarding “the Goldman letter” tomorrow morning before testimony resumes.

Rajaratnam, 53, is on trial in the largest crackdown on hedge-fund insider trading in U.S. history. The Sri Lankan-born money manager is accused of making $45 million from tips leaked by corporate insiders and hedge fund traders.

Goldman Sachs closed Tuesday at $160.79, gaining $0.58, or 0.36 percent.

Goldman Sachs Q4 Profit Plunges 53%, Results Anticipated

The poor fourth quarter results of Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (NYSE:GS) were anticipated, but that hasn't stopped the stock price being pressured today in trading.

Goldman was trading at $169.92, losing $4.76, or 2.72 percent, as of 10:40 AM EST.

What was more disappointing than expected was the revenue generated by Goldman in the quarter, which dropped from $9.6 billion last year in the same quarter to $8.6 billion this year. The Street was looking for $9 billion in revenue.

Earnings for the quarter came in at $2.4 billion, or $3.79 a share, falling from $4.9 billion, or $8.20 a share last year. That was in line with what analysts had projected.

As with some of their peers, investment banking dropped significantly in the quarter, 10 percent below last year, generating $1.51 billion. For the year investment banking revenue was down 3 percent.

Goldman Sachs Chief Executive Officer Lloyd Blankfein said that while last year was a difficult one for the company, they are "seeing signs of growth and more economic activity."
