Univision Overtakes Comcast's (CMCSA) NBC in Key Demographics

Coming off their blockbuster acquisition of NBC from General Electric (NYSE:GE), Comcast (NASDAQ:CMCSA) is getting a look at the challenges they face as Univision surpassed NBC in viewers in key demographics of adults aged 18-34 and people aged 12-34.

Univision also said they're poised to become the No. 4 network after the February sweeps.

That's crucial to network television, as the sweeps determing the audiance a network is attracting, along with the advertising power they have.

That's bad news for Comcast in the early stages of its control of NBC, although not surprising for those who follow the weakened network.

NBC could be a drain on Comcast for some time, as it has struggled for years to generate interest from consumers.

Comcast was trading at $25.21, falling $0.07, or 0.28 percent, as of 2:39 PM EST.

General Electric (NYSE:GE) Sold Vivendi's Final Stake in NBC Universal

In a deal made in the latter part of 2009 where Vivendi said it would sell its stake in NBC Universal to General Electric (NYSE:GE) once regulators gave Comcast (Nasdaq:CMCSA) approval to acquire the company, they have now completed the transaction for $3.8 billion

The stake represented 12.34 percent of the media giant.

GE said in a statement, "Vivendi has concluded, on January 25, 2011, the sale of the remainder of its stake in NBC Universal, a 12.34 percent stake, for $3.8 billion to GE."

Vivendi originally had a 20 percent stake in NBC Universal, but sold the other 7.66 percent to General Electric in September for $2 billion.

General Electric closed Wednesday at $19.92, down $0.06, or 0.30 percent. Comcast closed at $23.32, down $0.02, or 0.09 percent.

Comcast (Nasdaq:CMCSA) Now Majority Owner of NBC Universal (NYSE:GE)

The FCC in a 4-1 vote, and the Justice Department, both gave approval for Comcast (Nasdaq:CMCSA) to acquire a 51 percent stake in NBC Universal (NYSE:GE).

Comcast is acquiring the 51 percent stake from General Electric for $13.8 billion in assets and cash.

The deal had numerous caveats which Comcast and NBC Universal will have to abide by. The vast majority of them deal with the preservation of competition from the massive authority in the market Comcast will now enjoy.

On the side of Comcast, Executive Vice President David Cohen said the conditions included with the deal won't "disadvantage the competitive positioning of the Comcast Cable or NBC Universal businesses."

The majority of the conditions associated with the deal will be in place for a period of seven years.

Comcast closed at $22.78, up $0.06, or 0.26 percent.
