Kinross (KGC) (AUY) (NXG) (AEM) (PZG) Trade Down As Gold Drops
Gold and silver prices went through a reversal Friday as gold closed down and silver rebounded to close higher, putting pressure on gold miners such as Kinross Gold Corp (NYSE:KGC), Yamana Gold (NYSE:AUY), Northgate Minerals (AMEX:NXG), Agnico-Eagle (NYSE:AEM) and Paramount Gold and Silver (AMEX:PZG) - which closed down - and gold ETFS.
Gold for June delivery fell $13.10 to close at $1,493.60 at the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange. The spot gold price was down by about $13 an ounce. Silver prices settled up 21 cents to $35.01 an ounce.
The U.S. dollar index was up 0.74 percent to $75.75 as the euro continued to get hammered on the sovereign debt crises in Europe. The euro plunged 1.7 percent last week as Greece was again in the spotlight for the need to probably be bailed out again, as it appears the country refuses to implement austerity measures to deal with the situation, as it, along with numerous countries, has made progressive, socialists promises they aren't able to keep.
Besides the long-term collapse of the U.S. dollar and the European sovereign debt crises, other factors offering support to gold include tightening in China, inflation, and unrest in the middle east.
Yamana closed Friday at $11.80, down $0.18, or 1.50 percent.

Paramount Gold and Silver (AMEX:PZG) Soars on San Miguel Discovery
Among small cap stocks, Paramount Gold and Silver Corp. (AMEX:PZG) was among the top three performers in the segment last week, soaring almost 44 percent on the discovery of significant new resources at San Miguel.
It is located in one of the hottest mining spots in the world: Sierra Madre Occidental, which is loaded with gold and silver.
What's impressive about this isn't only the discovery, but the fact Paramount stuck with their strategy of working in the areas of proven reserves discovered by other miners.
In this case it appears their new "discovery" is in fact an extension of the Palmarejo geological structure which Coeur d'Alene Mines' (NYSE:CDE) works.
So far there has been positive identification of 550 meters strike length, and is estimated to probably have another 200 meters more to it.
When contrasted with Palmarejo, gold and silver yields in some parts are reportedly far higher than the 1.86 grams a ton there. One drill hole has produced 590.4 grams of silver a ton and 6.53 grams of gold a ton.
Paramount closed Friday at $2.59, up $0.75, or 40.76 percent. Volume was over double the 3-month daily average.

Ivanhoe (NYSE:IVN), Paramount (AMEX:PZG), Northgate (AMEX:NXG), Aurizon (AMEX:AZK) Finish Positive on Down Day
Ivanhoe Mines (NYSE:IVN), Northgate Minerals (AMEX:NXG), Aurizon Mines (AMEX:AZK) Paramount Gold and Silver Corp. (AMEX:PZG) all managed to finish positive on an otherwise slow day, as most gold miners and miners in general were down.
Gold prices have been under pressure because of low inflation and the silly notion the European sovereign debt crisis is under control. People will find out about that soon enough, just like the recent reminder when Ireland debt was downgraded.
Some are attempting to prop up the euro, but over the long-term, and probably short-term, it is unlikely to work. Gold had been moving up as the euro went down.
Gold miners and other metal producers have declined with gold prices, but the companies listed here were all able to buck that trend on Wednesday.
Topping the list is one of my favorites for the long term, Ivanhoe Mines, which closed at $17.02 a share, gaining $0.29, or 1.73 percent. Volume was above the 3-month average for the day.
Paramount Gold and Silver Corp., as measured by percentage, was up the most of these four, ending the day at $1.33, gaining $0.06, or 4.72 percent. Volume was just above average for them.
Northgate Minerals finished the session at an even $3.00, increasing $0.09, or 3.09 percent. Northgate traded far above the normal 3-month trading average.
Aurizon (AMEX:AZK) ended the day at $4.90, gaining $0.05, or 1.03 percent. Trading volume for them was below the 3-month average.

Paramount Gold and Silver (AMEX:PZG) Acquiring X-Cal Resources (TSE:XCL)
U.S. exploration company Paramount Gold and Silver (AMEX:PZG) (TSE:PZG) has been hunting for over a year for an acquisition that makes sense to them, and they have found it in Canadian-based gold exploration company X-Cal Resources (TSE:XCL), which they announced they have acquired in a straight stock deal for $30.4 million.
Paramount's existing projects are in Mexico, while the primary holding of X-Cal Resources is the Sleeper gold project in Nevada.
The newly merged company, assuming shareholder approval, will focus on getting the Sleeper project.
"They have a program to spend between $4 million and $10 million on that property over the next 18 months to bring it back to the point where it can be developed," said one source.
The Sleeper project has an estimated million ounces of gold in it.

Larry Segerstrom, COO of Paramount Gold and Silver Corp., commented, "LU-18 is very encouraging in its confirmation of the continuity of thick high gold mineralization at Clavo 66 and supports Paramount's decision to proceed to prefeasibility studies at Clavo 66."
Also reported is important drill hole SJ-13, which was drilled to test a geophysical anomaly below surface mineralization in the San Jose area. Surface mapping and earlier drilling indicated that the mineralized zone generally dips east. However, there are some veins at the surface that also dip west, towards a strong geophysical anomaly. Drill hole SJ-13 confirmed that veining dips west. The geophysical anomaly appears to be owing to the steep side of a shallow intrusion that underlies the San Jose area to the immediate east at a much higher level than where it was intersected in this hole. Further drill testing is planned in this area.
Quality Control
Paramount takes detailed digital photos of the entire core before it is cut by saw to half core which is assayed at ALS Chemex's Vancouver laboratory. As part of quality assurance, quality control (QA/QC), Paramount has put into place a detailed program of periodically introducing certified standards, blanks and duplicates into the sample stream. Half-core samples are being retained on site for verification and reference purposes.
