Tesla Motors (TSLA) Gets More Analyst Support
For some reason the unprofitable Tesla Motors, Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA) received some analyst support for its high-priced electric cars, pushing the share price of the company up.
Incredibly, Dougherty compared the stage Tesla is now to that of Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) in the personal computer and electronics spaces. What a bizarre fantasy and illusion that is.
After a recent visit to Tesla's operations in the San Francisco area, Dougherty said they came away believing the company is in the nascent stages of building a viable long-term company.
Dougherty raised their price target on Tesla from $30 to $40. Unbelievable, Morgan Stanley (NYSE:MS) in March put a $70 a share target on the shares of Tesla.
Tesla was trading at $25.50, up $0.36, or 1.43 percent, as of 1:25 PM EDT.

Tesla (TSLA) Jumps on Morgan Stanley (MS) Upgrade
Shares of Tesla Motors, Inc. (NASDAQ: TSLA) received a boost today on an upgrade from Morgan Stanley (NYSE:MS), as the stock has risen as high as 20 percent in response to the positive outlook.
Incredibly, Morgan Stanley not only gave an improved outlook on the stock, but also placed a price target of $70 on the shared; far above double what they're trading at even with the boost in share price.
Morgan Stanley said they believe Tesla could become the fourth major auto maker in the U.S. behind Ford Motor (NYSE: F), General Motors (NYSE: GM) and Chrysler.
Sounds more like religion than a reality, but we'll see if the highly unprofitable electric car company can some day return a profit.
Sales would have to go beyond the wasteful spending of taxpayer money on the high-priced vehicles the company makes.
Tesla was trading at $26.99, gaining $3.28, or 13.83 percent, as of 1:35 PM EDT.

Tesla (TSLA) Sues Top Gear for Libel, Falsehood
BBC's Top Gear, the most popular show on the network, was sued by Tesla Motors (Nasdaq:TSLA), alleging libel and malicious falsehood.
"One of the show's presenters, Jeremy Clarkston, said although the car is quick, the range on Tesla's Roadster is limited. Clarkston claimed Tesla's Roadster ran out of juice after 55 miles, compared to the 200 million range the Palo Alto, CA-based automaker claimed it had. Tesla alleges the scene where the Roadster was shown running out of energy was faked, according to the filing," said TheStreet.
"This would be a material event to Tesla, as a 260% overstatement of battery life may impact a buyers decision to go with Tesla in the future, rather than General Motors (NYSE: GM) or Ford (NYSE: F). According to Bloomberg, the filing stated Top Gear's claim of 55 miles implies Tesla "'grossly misled potential purchasers of the Roadster.'"
"Top Gear has an audience of six million in the U.K. and viewership of 350 million internationally."
Tesla was trading at $23.68, down $0.24, or 1.00 percent.

Tesla Motors (NASDAQ:TSLA) Price Where it Should Be
Citing high costs and lack of infrastructure resulting in 'range anxiety,' Capstone Investments said on initiating coverage of Tesla Motors (NASDAQ:TSLA) that is its priced just where it should be.
Capstone noted, "Market for EVs will not grow in the time frame anticipated. We believe the premium cost and range anxiety will limit adoption of EVs. Tesla has sold - 1,400 vehicles since 2008 primarily because of a high sales price ($109K base price) but also because of the lack of recharging infrastructure, range limitations versus conventional vehicles and lack of a brand name. We expect that hybrid EVs (HEVs) and plug-in hybrid EVs (PHEVs) will continue to take the lion's share of green conscious automobile consumers given their lower price points, better driving ranges and availability from brand name OEMs such as General Motors, Nissan and Toyota."
Capstone Investments initiated coverage on Tesla Motors (NASDAQ: TSLA) with a "Sell" rating. Tesla was trading at $30.62, down $2.01, or 6.16 percent as of 12:49 PM EST. They have a price target on them of $22.

Shorting Tesla Motors (TSLA), Zoltek (Nasdaq:ZOLT) and American Superconductor (Nasdaq:AMSC)
Tesla Motors (TSLA), Zoltek (Nasdaq:ZOLT) and American Superconductor (Nasdaq:AMSC) are all the target of shorts, especially from hedge funds no longer believing the so-called renewable energy stocks will be as viable with the change of leadership in the U.S.
Canaccord noted, "According to Bloomberg, hedge funds have increased their short interest in U.S. renewable energy stocks to the highest level in a year, elevating bets against Tesla Motors especially. The bearish sentiment comes as government support for low-polluting technologies is faltering: with the recent Republican wins in U.S. mid-term elections, U.S. President Barack Obama has said he may be unable to reduce U.S. greenhouse-gas emissions. Republicans are seeking to roll back Environmental Protection Agency rules limiting carbon venting, ease curbs on coal mining and may try to block billions of dollars in federal subsidies for clean power. An analyst at Bloomberg New Energy Finance in London thinks this Republican opposition is a "huge deal". He noted the lack of an international agreement on climate change and short-term uncertainty on policy support across the globe "makes the sector fairly susceptible to predatory trades from hedge funds.” Seventeen percent of the freely traded shares of the 35 U.S. stocks in the WilderHill New Energy Index are currently sold short, compared with 16% in October and 15% in August, Bloomberg notes. That’s almost four times the 4.4% short ratio of the S&P 500. The most-shorted stock in this index is California electric carmaker Tesla Motors; investors had shorted 65% of Tesla’s free-float as of November 15. Others that are heavily shorted include Zoltek (Nasdaq:ZOLT), a maker of carbon fiber for blades used in wind turbines, and American Superconductor (Nasdaq:AMSC), whose converters connect turbines to power grids."
Tesla closed Friday at $31.49, down by $0.86, or 2.66 percent. American Superconductor was down to $33.36, falling $0.10, or 0.30 percent. Zoltek was at $9.61, up by $0.09, or 0.95 percent.
