Google (GOOG) Migrating Towards Verifone (PAY) Mobile Payments

In a move that will provide a consistent revenue stream for Google (NASDAQ:GOOG), it's near field communications (NFC) chips in Android phones will allow customers to make purchases on credit and debit cards at stores with Verifone (NYSE:PAY) terminals using MasterCard (NYSE:MA) and Citibank (NYSE:C).

Other competitors already with plans in place are Verizon (NYSE:VZ) and AT&T (NYSE:T), which are going to use Discover Financial Services (NYSE:DFS) in the same manner.

The Street said, "If everything goes according to plan, Google's near field communications (NFC) chips in Android phones will allow customers to make purchases on credit and debit cards at stores with Verifone(PAY) terminals.

"The move is just the latest that pits Google against its telco partners in a race to new mobile revenue streams. In Google's case however, the budding mobile payment technology may be more of an intelligence-gathering process for its advertising business."

Expectations are Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) is also ready to enter this segment of the market as well.

Google was trading at $581.51, up $1.77, or 0.31 percent, as of 1:55 PM EDT. veriFone is trading at $55.35, gaining $2.55, or 4.83 percent. Mastercard was $252.16, rising $4.46, or 1.80 percent. Citigroup was at $4.43, up $0.03, or 0.78 percent.

VeriFone Systems (NYSE:PAY) Revenue, Margins Improve

VeriFone Systems (NYSE:PAY) enjoyed a profit in its latest quarter, generated by improvement in revenue and margins. They also made a bid for e-payment company Hypercom (NYSE:HYC).

Canaccord said, "The credit card swipe machine maker swung to a fourth-quarter profit, beating its own estimates, as revenue and margins improved. VeriFone, whose customers are primarily financial institutions, payment processors, petroleum companies and retailers, said net income was $49.4 million, or $0.55 a share, for August-October, compared with a loss of $2.2 million, or $0.03 a share, in the same period last year. Sales of $276 million were up 27% from last year; in the U.S. and Canada, sales rose 40% to $122.1 million, while revenue from Latin America jumped 52% to $53 million. The company has seen better results of late, helped by strong growth in its services business. As such, VeriFone’s stock has more than doubled this year. It did well on Friday, too, after the company forecast current-quarter earnings of $0.38-0.39 on revenue of $265-270 million, compared with analysts’ views of $0.35 on $260 million. After more than a month of pursuit, VeriFone recently announced that it will buy fellow e-payment company Hypercom (NYSE:HYC) for about $465 million in stock in a deal intended to boost VeriFone’s presence in Europe. At least one investor isn’t happy about this transaction, though, as a suit was filed in the Delaware court yesterday alleging Hypercom has been undervalued. “The offer price reflects an inadequate premium to the trading price of the company’s common stock given that Hypercom continues to have record revenue growth,” shareholder Chad Small in his suit. Whether this will have any impact on the transaction remains to be seen.

Verifone closed Monday at $39.83, losing $0.04, or 0.10 percent.

VeriFone's (NYSE:PAY) Outlook Conservative Says Barclays (NYSE:BCS)

Commenting on VeriFone's (NYSE:PAY) guidance for 2011, Barclays (NYSE:BCS) said they see it as conservative, and reiterate their "Overweight" rating on the company.

Barclays said, "...Importantly, we continue to believe PAY's FY 2011 outlook is conservative: (1) We estimate that core business trends, excluding petroleum and taxi, would already get PAY close to its revenue growth guidance; (2) We suspect the potential increase in petroleum unit sales is not fully baked into guidance; (3) The taxi business continues to trend above plan; (4) Guidance only assumes a modest benefit from end-to-end encryption in the second half of 2011, whereas we expect considerable upside as the First Data partnership solidifies; (5) There may be incremental upside to services revenue from a GAAP change effective 1/1/11; (6) The HYC deal is not included in estimates or guidance despite an expected mid-year deal close, and we see $0.30-$0.50 annualized accretion as achievable; and (7) Gross margin is already trending above 40%, indicating a higher run rate into 2011 than we believe is incorporated in guidance. With trends accelerating in the core hardware and services businesses, the quarter increased our confidence in the sustainability of PAY's growth story, and we continue to highly recommend shares." (Raises FY11 EPS estimate from $1.66 to $1.78."

VeriFone soared Friday, closing at $39.87, up by $3.11, or 8.46 percent. Barclays raised their price target on them from $39 to $44. Volume was about 4 times the 3-month daily trading average.

Barclays (NYSE:BCS) Maintains "Overweight" on VeriFone (NYSE:PAY)

Barclays (NYSE:BCS) maintains its "Overweight" rating on VeriFone (NYSE:PAY), citing a friendlier acquisition offer for Hypercom.

"While this is a substantial increase from VeriFone's September 29, 2010 all-cash offer of $5.25 per share, we had anticipated that a higher (friendlier) offer could be made given the considerable accretion potential. Management expects first year accretion of 15% to VeriFone shareholders. However, assuming only 10% of cost saves and the divestiture of Hypercom's (NYSE: HYC) U.S. business, we see more than $0.30 of EPS accretion as achievable (almost 20% potential accretion on our fiscal 2011 EPS estimate - although deal timing will likely not be until mid-2011). We also believe that cost saves are likely to reach closer to 15%, which we estimate could result in almost $0.50 of potential EPS upside, or 30% potential accretion to fiscal 2011 estimates," said Barclays.

VeriFone closed Thursday at $33.51, increasing by $0.60, or 1.82 percent. Barclays has a price target of $39 on them.
