In an interesting admission, outgoing Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) CEO Eric Schmidt said the company worked hard to partner with Finnish mobile giant Nokia (NYSE:NOK) before they made its Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) decision to use their Windows Phone 7 platform.
Research in Motion (NASDAQ:RIMM) also revealed that they had rejected advanced from Nokia to work together, although it wasn't clear how deep the negotiations went.
Schmidt said at the Mobile World Congress in Spain, "We would have loved if they had chosen Android. They chose the other guys."
"We had confidential negotiations with Nokia that were very extensive," added Schmidt.
A year ago, at the same event Google said it was committed to making mobile the center of its growth strategy.
Google closed Tuesday at $624.15, dropping $4.00, or 0.64 percent. Nokia closed at $9.07, gaining $0.23, or 2.60 percent.
