Big Movers (INFY) (SM) (PTR) (ONXX) (EOC) on May 6

Among the big, positive movers on Friday, May 6, were Infosys Technologies (INFY), Sm Energy Company (SM), Petrochina Company (PTR), Onyx Pharmaceuticals (ONXX) and Empresa Nacional (EOC).

Infosys Technologies (INFY) jumped $1.52, to close at $64.82, a gain of 2.40 percent.

Sm Energy Company (SM) was up $1.51 on the day to close at $65.26, a gain of 2.37 percent.

Petrochina Company (PTR) climbed $1.51 to close at $134.89, a gain of 1.13 percent.

Onyx Pharmaceuticals (ONXX) rose $1.50 to close the session at $39.81, a gain of 3.92 percent.

Empresa Nacional (EOC) was up $1.50 to end the day at $25.38, a gain of 2.74 percent.

Alexion (NASDAQ:ALXN), Cadence (NASDAQ:CADX), Cubist (NASDAQ:CBST), Dendreon (NASDAQ:DNDN), Human Genome (NASDAQ:HGSI) Could be Takeover Targets

With time and costs a major factor in the drug industry, companies appear to be hunting for takeover targets like Alexion (NASDAQ:ALXN), Cadence (NASDAQ:CADX), Cubist (NASDAQ:CBST), Dendreon (NASDAQ:DNDN) and Human Genome (NASDAQ:HGSI), which have a pipeline, or are close to developing a pipeline, with soon-to-be-approved drugs.

Others noted in a recent Barron's article as possible takeover candidates were Acorda (NASDAQ:ACOR), AMAG Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ:AMAG), BioMarin (NASDAQ:BMRN), Cephalon (NASDAQ:CEPH), Jazz Pharma (NASDAQ:JAZZ), Onyx (NASDAQ:ONXX), United Therapeutics (NASDAQ:UTHR), and Salix Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ:SLXP).

Some of the companies rose on the assertions, with Cadence closing Monday at $7.76, gaining $0.47, or 6.52 percent.

Onyx Pharmaceuticals' (Nasdaq:ONXX) Carfilzomib Fast-Tracked by FDA

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granted Onyx Pharmaceuticals' (Nasdaq:ONXX) Carfilzomib fast-track designation

Carfilzomib is the multiple-myeloma drug of Onyx Pharmaceuticals.

What this means is the review process will accelerate, and Onyx will be allowed to to submit its carfilzomib application on a rolling basis. With the fast-track, the company believes they could end the process by the middle of 2011. They already have the process in motion.

Onyx closed Monday at $35.28, gaining $0.78, or 2.25 percent.

Onyx Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ:ONXX) Pipeline Underappreciated Says Barclays (NYSE:BCS)

Commenting on what they call Onyx Pharmaceuticals' (NASDAQ:ONXX) 'underappreciated pipeline," Barclays (NYSE:BCS) sees 2011 as a "transformative" year of Onyx.

Barclays (NYSE:BCS) said, "We are reiterating our rating on shares of ONXX following posting of BATTLE-2 trial details on ClinicalTrials.gov. Following impressive Nexavar efficacy in BATTLE-1, we continue to be optimistic about the potential for Nexavar success in MISSION with data expected next year and estimate an $800M potential in Nexavar lung revenues with - 25,000 3rd-line non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients.

"With investor focus on flagship carfilzomib, for which we expect YE11 approval to support - $1B in sales, we continue to believe 2011 will be transformative for ONXX and its underappreciated pipeline. We expect multiple milestones for Carfilzomib in myeloma and late-stage Nexavar opportunities in NSCLC, liver, thyroid, and breast coming up next year."

Barclays reiterates an "Overweight" on Onyx Pharmaceuticals, which closed Friday at $35.48, up $0.18, or 0.51 percent. They have a price target on them of $42.

Onyx Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ:ONXX) May Take Breather

Canaccord Genuity maintains their "Buy" rating on Onyx Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ:ONXX). but it comes with the caveat of uncertainty surrounding risks connected to the company.

Canaccord said, "We expect Dec. 6 ASH presentation of ONXX’s Phase II 003-A1 trial evaluating carfilzomib in r/r multiple myeloma to be positive, but it could leave important questions unanswered. Accordingly, despite our BUY thesis supported mostly on underappreciated value, we believe shares could take a breather...Our $34 target is based on a DCF. Risks include clinical trial failures and regulatory delays."

Onyx closed Tuesday down to $29.51, falling $0.20, or 0.67 percent. Canaccord has a price target of $34 on the company.
