JPMorgan (JPM) Recommends Newmont (NEM), (FCX), (MUSA), (STLD), Others

JPMorgan (NYSE:JPM), says Newmont Mining Corp. (NYSE:NEM), Metals USA Holdings Corp. (NYSE:MUSA), Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc. (NYSE:FCX) and Steel Dynamics Inc. (NASDAQ:STLD) are solid picks if an investor believes oil prices will remain high.

Also noted were Thompson Creek Metals Co. (NYSE:TC), DHT Holdings Inc. (NYSE:DHT), Amgen Inc. (NASDAQ:AMGN), Jabil Circuit Inc. (NYSE:JBL) and Gilead Sciences Inc. (NASDAQ:GILD) as having a lot of potential in a high oil price environment.

Thomas Lee, chief U.S. equity strategist at JPMorgan said there’s “downside risk” to the 2011 S&P 500 earnings-per-share estimate of $97.50, though not to the 1,425 year-end forecast.

Lee said every $20-a-barrel rise in the price of oil has an impact of $2.22 in earnings per share for the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index.

Stocks JPMorgan sees as those to avoid in this economic environment are Affymetrix Inc. (NASDAQ:AFFX), Standard Pacific Corp. (NYSE:SPF), MDC Holdings Inc. (NYSE:MDC) and Beazer Homes USA Inc. (NYSE:BZH).

Thompson Creek (NYSE:TC) Goes as Molybdenum Goes, Good News in Short Term

Thompson Creek (NYSE:TC) will be driven by the performance of molybdenum in the short term, says Deutsche (NYSE:DB), and they say that's a good thing for the company.

Deutsche said, "TC’s development of the Mt. Milligan copper-gold mine should reduce its single-product valuation discount.

"Given its single-product exposure to molybdenum (moly) in the near term, Thompson Creek's (TC) outlook is closely tied to the performance of this metal. We maintain a positive view for moly given demand from new applications, uncertain supply growth, and a shifting industry cost structure as higher-cost primary product accounts for a greater proportion of world output. DB expects moly price to continue rising till 2013 which should drive share price performance."

Deutsche Bank reiterates a "Buy" rating on Thompson Creek, which closed Tuesday at $15.08, gaining $0.57, or 3.93 percent. Deutsche has a price target of $18 on them, increasing it from $16.

First Majestic Silver (NYSE:AG), U.S. Gold (NYSE:UXG), Jaguar Mining (NYSE:JAG), Thompson Creek Metals (NYSE:TC) Among Tuesday's Top Performers

Of the top performers on Tuesday, five of the top ten, as measured by percentages on the NYSE, were miners, including First Majestic Silver (NYSE:AG), U.S. Gold (NYSE:UXG), Jaguar Mining (NYSE:JAG) and Thompson Creek Metals (NYSE:TC).

First Majestic Silver and U.S. Gold were No.1 and No. 2 respectively among all stocks on the exchange.

Much of this was centered around the fall in value of the U.S. dollar and gold and silver's safe haven status as well as being increasingly considered as an alternative currency if the U.S. dollar were to completely collapse.

First Majestic Silver closed Tuesday at $13.60, gaining $1.51, or 12.49 percent. U.S. Gold ended at $7.96, up $0.67, or 9.19 percent.

Jaguar Mining, which was the No. 4 gainer on Tuesday, based on percentages, closed at $7.18, up $0.50, or 7.49 percent. In 9th place Tuesday was Thompson Creek Metals, closing at $13.94, gaining $13.94, up $0.72, or 5.45 percent.

Other than Jaguar Mining, all the companies were above their 3-month daily trading volume.

Thompson Creek (NYSE:TC) Should Generate Higher Unit Prices

After their recent earnings report, Thompson Creek Metals (NYSE:TC) has shown that while its unit prices should rise through 2012, they will experience lower volumes during that time.

Consequently, Canaccord Genuity maintained a "Hold" rating on them, although they raised their price target on the mining company.

Canaccord said, "Thompson Creek reported Q3/10 financial results on November 4. Adjusted diluted EPS of US$0.32 was above our forecast of US$0.19 and the 14-analyst Bloomberg consensus of US$0.20, with a low income tax rate the primary difference to our forecasts. Operating results were in line. TCM provided 2011 and 2012 operating guidance, confirming expectations of lower volumes and higher unit prices into 2012.

"Our new 2011E and 2012E EBITDA forecasts are US$226 million and US$143 million, down from US$242 million and US$148 million. Our new 2011 and 2012 adjusted EPS forecasts are US$0.60 and US$0.23."

Thompson was trading at $13.38 in New York, gaining $0.26, or 1.98 percent as of 12:41 PM EDT. Canaccord increased their price target on them from C$10.30 to C$12.00.

Thompson Creek (NYSE:TC) Could be Prime Acquisition Target

With a number of large attempt to merge with large cap and mid-cap stocks, Deutsche Bank (NYSE:DB) says they see Thompson Creek (NYSE:TC) being an attractive acquisition candidate, and upgraded them from "Hold" to "BUY."

Deutsche said, "US Fed Quantitative Easing clearly favors hard asset producers. As a result we upgrade TC to Buy and raise our PT from $13 to $16 based on 12x 2011E EPS from 10x previously as we believe near-term valuations will rise as investors seek to re-allocate to dollar-defensive stocks. Further, given recent failed large cap M&A, mid-cap stocks may become renewed focus of consolidation, fueling further revaluation, supporting upgrade."

Thompson Creek primarily focuses on all aspects of the molybdenum market, from mining to marketing them across North America.

They closed Friday at $13.12, gaining $0.69, or 5.55 percent. Deutsche has a price target of $16 on them, raising it from $13 a share.
